Recently published Issue 2 focuses on the topic of ocean economies, livelihoods, and technologies, and includes research articles about the business of 19th-century transatlantic immigration, the role of captains’ wives in shaping early tourism in Hawai’i, and how the transition from sail to coal might help us think about today’s energy transition. A gorgeous photo essay explores fish markets around the world, and an anthropologist in the Philippines writes about a traditional deep-sea fishing boat. Also included is stunning art by three significant contemporary artists: Alexis Rockman, Firelei Baéz, and Masaaki Miyasako.

Scholarship from the print journal is simultaneously posted free and open access on our journal website. Mystic Seaport Museum is committed to making scholarship available at no cost to researchers, and your subscription to the print issue helps support that commitment.
