Mondays, January 6–February 24, 10:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m. (no class Jan. 20 or Feb. 17)

Back by popular demand, the Hands on History Homeschool Series will include working in the Shipsmith Shop and the Carve Shop, cooking in the Buckingham-Hall House, sewing sail materials in the Sail Loft, making natural fiber rope, and working in the 19th-century Print Shop. Students will work in small groups in a different trade each week.

  • For ages 10–13.
  • Maximum class capacity is 18 students.

This winter, warm up in the Museum’s Treworgy Planetarium with a cosmic voyage! Each week, we will take a deep dive into a different member of our solar system, with weekly activities based around the sun, moon, Earth, other planets, asteroids, and comets. By the end of the series, young astronomers will be experts on all of the members of our “local address” in the galaxy!

  • For ages 8–12

Mondays, March 3–April 7, 10:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m.

Students will learn about a wide variety of industries and professions in New England and try their hand at them. Case studies will include famous children’s book authors and illustrators, maritime inspired tattoos, wood sculptors and figurehead carvers, board game creators, comic book designers, and even teddy bear creators!

Mondays, 10:00am-1:00pm, April 14-May 19

Discover the roots of your favorite games! Each week, we’ll explore the fascinating history of a different sport, uncovering its origins, cultural significance, and evolution over time. Then, we’ll step back in time to play historic versions of the sports, experiencing firsthand how the games were once played.

  • For ages 8-13

Tuesdays, 10:00am-1:00pm, April 15th-May 20th
 
Students will learn how to sail in a friendly and fun environment on the waterfront of beautiful Mystic Seaport Museum. The sailing class emphasizes the basics of sailing terminology, seamanship skills like knot tying and rigging, boat handling, and the enjoyment of sailing. On days where sailing is not possible, students will also have the opportunity to learn about river ecology, powerboating, and navigation.
