Mystic Seaport Museum welcomes two artists in residence this summer. Visitors are invited to visit each artist in the John Gardner Boat Shop to learn more about their unique techniques and processes.
The Artist-in-Residence Program is hosted in collaboration with the Center for American Marine Art, which is dedicated to bringing American marine art to the forefront of our identity as a country.

Serena Bates has exhibited in galleries and shows throughout the United States and Canada and has received numerous prestigious awards and honors from organizations including the American Artists Professional League, Allied Artists of America, the Salmagundi Club, the Catherine Lorillard Wolfe Club, the Academic Artists Association, and the Mystic Museum of Art. She is also a member of the American Society of Marine Artists, Artists for Conservation, Allied Artists of America, the American Artists Professional League, and the Salmagundi Club.
Visit Artist-in-Residence Brechin Morgan at the John Gardner Boat Shop Annex July 17–August 2.
Brechin Morgan studied painting at Silvermine College of Art, where he first set out to become an abstract expressionist painter. For more than twenty years, he operated the Morgan Sign Company in South Norwalk before embarking on a solo circumnavigation of the globe in his 27-foot cutter, Otter, in 1998. His remarkable voyage earned him the Joshua Slocum Society Golden Circle Award. After returning to Connecticut, Morgan established a studio in Bridgeport, where he continues to create works inspired by his maritime travels and experiences. He is a Signature Member of the American Society of Marine Artists and is represented by galleries throughout New England.
