This October, a new epic immersive theatrical Halloween adventure is overtaking Mystic Seaport Museum—and it’s unlike anything we’ve done before.
The Grampus set sail for a three-year whaling expedition in October 1826. After a brutal storm in the North Atlantic, rations ran out and a violent mutiny erupted on board. The Grampus went adrift. The ravenous crew was never heard from again, and there were thought to be no survivors.
Until tonight.
Two hundred years later, the Grampus has appeared at the seaport docks—and its rowdy, mutinous ghost whalers are looking for mischief, mayhem, and revenge. Follow the crew as they tell their tale and confront the supernatural forces that dragged them back in a wild, riveting seaside homecoming 200 years in the making.
Produced with New York-based Clockjack Productions, What Lurks Beneath: Ghost Ship unfolds across the Museum’s historic waterfront, where eerie stories and larger-than-life maritime characters create a mysterious world filled with strange encounters and secrets lurking beneath the surface.
Wander the waterfront at your own pace, following the stories and characters that draw you in. Around every corner, ghostly whalers, eerie tales, and unexpected encounters build the suspense. The experience is more spine-tingling than terrifying, letting the setting, the story, and your imagination do the haunting.

Feeling brave? Step inside the Ropewalk and Burrows House, where the mood grows darker and the story takes a spookier turn. These indoor scenes are optional, so you can choose just how far into the mystery you want to venture. Enter at your own risk.
What Lurks Beneath: Ghost Ship is a self-guided nightly theatrical experience that takes place across a large portion of the campus of Mystic Seaport Museum. Inspired by Edgar Allan Poe’s 1838 novel, “The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket,” the experience involves thrilling performances—live music, wild storytelling, unexpected sound effects, and staged swashbuckling. The audience will meet a colorful cast of characters, each telling terrifying tales from their misadventures on the high seas over the past two centuries!
The event is recommended for ages 8 and up; however, every family will have a different comfort level with Halloween experiences, so we encourage you to use your own judgment based on what you and your child enjoy. The Haunted Factory and Captain Barnard’s House are scarier (optional) indoor encounters, and are labeled as such with signage. There are NO jump scares in any part of the experience.
The experience has limited timed entries, so purchasing your tickets in advance is highly recommended in order to get the ticket entry time of your choosing. Attendees can stay until the end regardless of what time they enter.
The entrance for this event is the Museum’s North Entrance at the Thompson Exhibition Building. Free on-site parking is available in the Museum’s North Parking Lot, across from the Thompson Exhibition Building. Additional parking is available in the Museum’s South Parking Lot, which is 3/10 mile from the North Entrance.
Please do not run on grounds or touch any of the actors. The Museum campus is smoke and vape-free. Weapons are prohibited.
Food is available at Schaefer’s Spouter Tavern which is open throughout the event and centrally located on the Museum grounds. Alcohol and non-alcoholic beverages can be purchased as well.
The tour is outdoors and on uneven ground. Please dress accordingly.
Some portions of our grounds are lit only with theatrical lighting to provide a spooky atmosphere. If you wish, you may bring an additional personal light source, such as a battery-powered lantern or a flashlight.
Yes, there is quite a bit of walking involved with this experience, on uneven ground. Please wear comfortable shoes and dress accordingly.
Attendees will receive a map and instructions when they check in, although the experience is entirely yours to explore and discover! Feel free to follow your favorite character and see where their misadventures lead throughout the night or explore what secrets may be lurking in the shadows!
The event is mainly outside, but there are several indoor exhibits to explore. The Tavern has indoor and outdoor seating. Please dress accordingly.
If it is raining lightly or intermittently, the event usually still takes place. In the case of heavy rain, we cancel that night and notify ticket holders. You may also check the website and social media for updates. Tickets can be transferred to any other remaining night.
Absolutely! Just no full face masks, please.
Most attendees spend about 1.5 hours enjoying the full event. But it can be more or less, depending on the number of people in your party and the pace at which you explore.
Yes, just call Visitor Services at 860-572-0711 to switch your tickets to another evening.
Pets are allowed on grounds, but not inside exhibit spaces or on our historic ships. We recommend you leave your furry friends at home to fully enjoy the experience. Service animals are allowed in all museum buildings and should be checked in at the entrance where they will receive a yellow collar tag.
