MYSTIC SEAPORT MUSEUM PARTNERS WITH WESTERLY SOUND ON NEW MUSIC SERIES

Mystic, Conn. (September 20, 2022) – Mystic Seaport Museum has launched a creative partnership with event production agency Westerly Sound, founded by nationally-recognized artist, musician and Westerly resident, Sean W. Spellman. The new collaboration seeks to expand the current live music programming at the Museum, providing visitors with diverse performances from musicians and bands from around the country. The new partnership is discussing a monthly music series as well as a potential multi-day music festival on the Museum’s 19-acre campus sometime in the future.

The kickoff event, dubbed “Mystic Folkways,” will happen as part of the Museum’s 3-day Riverfest celebration happening October 8, 9, and 10. Mystic Folkways (presented by Westerly Sound) will take place on Sunday, October 9 and feature a number of national and regional acts, as well as notable locals. The lineup includes Deer Tick (acoustic), Ian Felice (Felice Brothers), Martin Courtney (Real Estate), Nick Panken (Spirit Family Reunion), Tim Easton, James Maple, Karl Blau, The Can Kickers, Wildflower, and Sol/Rio Family Band. The event will run 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

“Sean brings a ton of experience, creativity, energy and vision to this partnership, as well as a deep appreciation for the Museum’s unique location and long tradition of offering affordable, family-friendly entertainment.” says Kevin O’Leary, VP of Marketing & Business Development for Mystic Seaport Museum. “The whole area around Mystic is really buzzing, the state is enjoying live music more than ever, it’s the right time and place for a partnership like this.”

Mystic Seaport Museum Curates a Family Friendly Event Lineup to Celebrate Fall in New England

Mystic, Conn. (September 13, 2022) – Mystic Seaport Museum is excited to premier an event lineup that celebrates fall in true New England fashion. Across the 19 acres of our grounds, nestled along the Mystic River, enjoy a backdrop of orange, yellow and red during prime leaf-peeping season with a specially curated series of events that visitors of all ages can enjoy.

Programming highlights include:

9/11 Remembrance Event, September 11

In honor of September 11, the Museum will screen the film “Fireboats of 9/11” (66 min) in Treworgy Planetarium. In this film, visiting vessel and National Historic Landmark FIRE FIGHTER has a starring role in the FDNY Marine Unit response to the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. The day’s events include:

12 – 5 p.m. – Guided tours of FIRE FIGHTER
2 p.m. – Film screening of “Fireboats of 9/11” introduced by Charlie Ritchie, President of the Fireboat Fire Fighter Museum (Limited seating for film screening, first-come, first-served)

The film screening is free for members and included with Museum admission for non-members.

Antique Vehicle Show, By Land & By Sea, September 24

Join us at the 25th annual antique vehicle show, where the Museum expects approximately 100 pre-1932 vehicles lining the streets of our 19th-century seafaring village for a delightful day of camaraderie. In the afternoon enjoy a Grand Parade around the Village Green and take advantage of this Instagram worthy opportunity to capture motoring history up close and personal.

Riverfest, October 8 – 10

Create lasting memories while enjoying the fall foliage, and venture onto the river in a rowboat, sailboat, pedal boat, or captained boat. Kick back with some tasty brews and delicious food at our Riverfest Beer Garden at Spouter Tavern and enjoy live music all three days including the Mystic Folkways Stage presented by Westerly Sound on Sunday, October 9. See below for more information. Several fishing boats and their crews will be docking with us over the course of the weekend to meet visitors and talk about oyster farming and sustainable fishing.

Mystic Folkways, October 9

A new creative partnership dubbed “Mystic Folkways” between the Museum and regional events agency Westerly Sound will debut as part of the Museum’s 3-day Riverfest celebration. Mystic Folkways will take place on Sunday, October 9 and feature several national and regional acts. Scheduled to perform: James Maple, Karl Blau, Tim Easton, Nick Panken (Spirit Family Reunion), Wildflower, Ian Felice (Felice Brothers), the Cankickers and others. More information will be forthcoming.

Opening Weekend of Sargent, Whistler & Venetian Glass: American Artists and the Magic of Murano, October 15 – 16

Join us for the opening of this world class exhibition which brings to life the Venetian glass revival of the late nineteenth century and the artistic experimentation the city inspired for visiting artists. While here enjoy a Gondola ride on the Mystic River!

Halloween Happenings, October 22 – 31

Our Halloween events are visitor favorites, and this year is no exception. From pumpkin carving, to a spooky-ish and fun Jack-o-Lantern Walk through our historic village — complete with games, crafts, and live music — to our Community Trick or Treat Scavenger Hunt on October 31.

RIVERFEST IS THE PLACE TO BE OCT. 9-11!

 

 Mystic Seaport Museum hosting a weekend of music, inspired by the sea

Mystic, Conn., SEPT. 29, 2021 –Mystic Seaport’s Riverfest celebration is the place to be October 9-11 for a fun-filled weekend of music on the water. You won’t want to miss the pub sing and three days of folk and sea music performed across two stages. The music, inspired by the sea, will be infused with culture. There will also be ample opportunities to get out on the water, whether on a rowboat, sailboat or a captained boat ride.

“We continue to support and promote traditional and modern sea music from across the globe and to present it to as many visitors as possible. It may not be in the same format as people remember it, but welcome to the first Riverfest and welcome to the new Mystic Seaport Museum,” said Peter Armstrong, the New Museum President.

The musical line-up starts Saturday at 10 a.m. with Geoffrey Kaufman, David Littlefield, and Joseph Morneault. Also on Saturday is the Ancient Mariners Chanteymen, a sub-group of the Ancient Mariners Fife and Drum Corps, and The Johnson Girls, an all-female a-cappella song group based in New York City who perform music  from a mélange of cultures, including the U.S., Britain, Ireland, Italy, French-Canada, and the Caribbean. Stick around for a traditional pub-sing of sea chanteys from 4-6 p.m. Schaefer’s Spouter Tavern on the Museum grounds will be open for purchase of drinks.

Sunday brings Cape Verdean musicians Ne Nas and Roy Tabwa to the stage, as well as Celtic-American roots music super group RUNA.

On Monday, Indigenous Peoples’ Day, there will be indigenous music and dance. Other acts include Sharks Come Cruisin’, which plays a mix of sea chanteys and maritime music. Audience participation and celebration is at the center of their music and live performances.

And that’s not all! There will be food trucks, fall-themed crafts, rides on an antique Model A truck, and chowder demonstrations daily. Short Rib Cafe; Captain Scott’s Lobster; Jumping Cow Ice Cream; and Suya Joint are the food trucks that will be serving up treats.
